You will lead the engineering efforts for a platform that helps state and local governments manage procurement, contracts, and grants. Reporting directly to executive leadership, you will balance hands-on coding with team management, ensuring high security and compliance standards.
The role requires collaborating with on-shore and off-shore squads to deliver reliable software for mission-critical public sector workflows. You will define technical strategy, improve delivery predictability, and integrate AI-native tools into the development process.
What you'll do
- Lead and coach a blended team of full-time engineers, contractors, and offshore partners
- Contribute directly to the codebase and investigate complex technical problems
- Own architecture decisions, technical debt management, and platform vision
- Ensure delivery predictability and manage engineering commitments
- Define code review norms, testing expectations, and deployment safety
- Manage uptime, incident response, and on-call structures
- Champion AI-assisted development tools like Claude and Cursor
- Partner with Product and Customer Experience to translate business priorities
What you'll need
- 7+ years of software building experience with 2-3 years leading engineers
- Active involvement in writing and reviewing code
- Strong fundamentals in distributed systems and cloud architecture
- Proven track record of maintaining predictable quality and delivery
- Experience leading distributed teams across multiple time zones
- Fluency with modern AI-assisted development practices
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for internal and external use
Nice to have
- Experience at an early-to-mid-stage startup
- Background in GovTech or regulated environments like FedRAMP or SOC 2
- Experience building or scaling offshore engineering functions
- Based in San Francisco Bay Area or Washington DC
