Emergence is building an R&D Center of Excellence in Cairo to elevate engineering standards across its portfolio of B2B software companies. As the founding leader, you will build and manage a team of engineers who are embedded into portfolio companies in healthcare, automotive, and infrastructure sectors.
This role combines organizational leadership with technical depth. You will define hiring standards, oversee deployment models, and drive cross-cutting capabilities like AI and automation. You report directly to the co-founder and work closely with CEOs and CTOs of portfolio companies.
What you'll do
- Build the R&D Center of Excellence from the first hire into a multi-vertical organization
- Define and enforce high quality bars for hiring and performance of deployed engineers
- Manage the forward-deployment model, deciding engineer placements and accountability
- Chair biweekly forums with portfolio technical leaders to calibrate talent and staffing
- Set portfolio-wide engineering standards for testing, shipping, and observability
- Lead the central engineering team building internal platforms and AI-driven tooling
- Establish strategies for using AI in engineering while maintaining codebase maintainability
- Collaborate with CEOs and CTOs to align engineering capabilities with business needs
- Oversee the economics of the engineering model alongside the managing partner
What you'll need
- Deep technical background with years of experience designing and operating production systems
- Proven track record of scaling engineering teams, systems, and architecture from small to large
- Experience leading multiple engineering teams across different products or companies
- Strong judgment in hiring talent and making difficult decisions regarding performance
- Experience building delivery machinery to enable fast and safe software releases
- Fluency in modern engineering practices including frequent shipping and built-in quality
- Clear point of view on AI landscape and its impact on software development
- Breadth across multiple languages, stacks, cloud environments, and domains
- Clear and confident English communication skills for technical and business discussions
- Based in Egypt with availability for afternoon-to-evening Cairo schedule
