You will build the core infrastructure powering the Railway engine, exposing capabilities that allow users to scale their applications. The work requires building custom system-level software rather than relying on standard Kubernetes setups, focusing on efficiency and first-principles engineering.

This high-agency role impacts company trajectory directly. You will design fault-tolerant services, manage resource efficiency at the kernel level, and ensure solutions are documented and monitored for long-term resilience.

What you'll do

  • Build system-level software from scratch based on first principles
  • Optimize efficiency of CPU, memory, network, and kernel usage
  • Develop scalable Golang or Rust gRPC services
  • Design fault-tolerant and resilient distributed systems
  • Implement monitoring and document error boundaries for solutions
  • Occasionally participate in on-call rotations

What you'll need

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems architecture
  • Deep knowledge of OS level primitives and kernel mechanics
  • Ability to prioritize effectively in ambiguous startup environments
  • Skill in implementing, scaling, and replacing solutions as needed
  • Strong communication skills for technical alignment
  • Intuition for solution longevity and technical debt

Stack

  • Golang
  • Rust
  • gRPC
  • Postgres
  • RAFT

How you'll work

  • Fully remote position available worldwide
  • Asynchronous work culture with minimal meetings
  • Requires diligent management of personal boundaries
  • Occasional on-call duties expected

What you get

  • Competitive salary package
  • Full health benefits including dependents
  • Strong equity grants
  • Equipment stipend provided
  • High autonomy with few scheduled meetings

Hiring process

  • Initial open-ended conversation about role and goals
  • Asynchronous project: Architect a Container Provisioning Engine
  • Technical review: Discuss solution with team members
  • Team interview: Meet four colleagues from different sections
  • Final offer and details discussion with CEO
