Uberall's GEO team builds products that help multi-location brands improve their visibility in AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT and Gemini. As Backend Engineering Lead, you will combine people leadership with active coding to shape the architecture behind these AI-search products.
You will guide the team in navigating the technical ambiguities of generative AI while ensuring reliable, scalable backend solutions. This role requires staying close to the work, contributing to design and code reviews, and translating customer needs into maintainable systems.
What you'll do
- Hire, mentor, and manage the GEO backend team through 1:1s and performance reviews
- Collaborate with Product to shape priorities and ensure realistic delivery commitments
- Foster engineering culture via shared standards, code reviews, and knowledge sharing
- Contribute actively to system design, coding, and pull request reviews
- Design backend systems integrating with LLMs and AI-powered search platforms
- Establish methods to evaluate quality and consistency of AI-generated results
- Ensure LLM capabilities are observable, testable, cost-efficient, and resilient
- Manage challenges like non-deterministic behavior, latency, and rate limits
What you'll need
- Proven experience leading engineering teams with genuine people responsibility
- Motivation to remain hands-on with code and technical design as a lead
- Strong proficiency in Kotlin or Groovy; Java or Scala skills are a plus
- Solid experience with Spring Boot, Hibernate, JUnit, MySQL, and Elasticsearch
- Experience with Docker, AWS, OpenAPI, microservices, and event-driven systems
- Hands-on experience building production systems using LLMs or generative AI
- Understanding of monitoring LLM features beyond traditional deterministic testing
- Experience designing reliable third-party API integrations managing cost and latency
Nice to have
- Experience with Python and LLM orchestration frameworks like LangChain
- Familiarity with prompt management and retrieval-augmented generation
- Knowledge of embeddings, vector search, or LLM evaluation frameworks
