Alternative Payments is expanding its financial operating system for SMBs with Alti, an AI agent product launched in July 2026. As a Lead Software Engineer, you will scale this core product by integrating proprietary ML models alongside LLMs and establishing standards for AI evaluation and observability. This is a technical leadership role focused on architecture and delivery rather than people management.
What you'll do
- Own technical direction for Alti features including conversational AI and agents
- Define standards for LLM evaluation, prompt management, and monitoring
- Design RAG pipelines and agent architectures with necessary trade-offs
- Transition features from LLM-only to proprietary ML models in production
- Identify new ML use cases across the accounts payable platform
- Act as an AI reference for the product org through design reviews
- Write code weekly to maintain hands-on engineering skills
What you'll need
- Strong software engineering experience with end-to-end feature ownership
- Hands-on AI product work in the last 12 months involving LLMs or agents
- Experience with chatbots, conversational AI, and RAG pipelines
- Proficiency in Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, or Python
- Autonomy to define processes in new areas rather than just executing them
- Product mindset focused on user delivery over model perfection
- Professional working proficiency in English
Nice to have
- Experience deploying ML models with monitoring and feedback loops
- Familiarity with AI monitoring and observability tooling
- Prompt engineering experience
- Background in fintech, payments, or financial products
- Experience at both early-stage startups and larger tech companies
