You will own the technical direction for Marqeta's Core Issuing & Processing team, which handles authorization, clearing, and settlement for every transaction. The work focuses on building always-on, real-time money-movement systems where correctness and strict consistency are mandatory.
This position requires deep involvement in code, system design, and operational excellence. You will partner with product and engineering leaders to drive reliability, latency improvements, and cost efficiency across six critical domains including digital wallets and ledgers.
What you'll do
- Own the technical roadmap and author system designs for other engineers
- Write, review, and optimize code across the issuing and processing stack
- Drive initiatives to improve reliability, latency, and cost of core engines
- Partner with Product to translate requirements into technical designs
- Mentor technical leads and set success metrics for the engineering organization
- Make critical decisions on data models, consistency, and failure strategies
What you'll need
- 12+ years of hands-on engineering experience with active coding
- Deep experience with real-time transactional systems under hard latency budgets
- Proven track record operating systems at four nines availability or better
- Strong expertise in data consistency, idempotency, and distributed transactions
- Experience writing, defending, and operating system designs in production
- Background building and scaling microservices on modern cloud infrastructure
- Strong JVM fundamentals and experience with multi-region failover
Nice to have
- Experience with double-entry ledger or financial reconciliation at scale
- Background in payment processing, card issuing, or ISO 8583 stacks
- Domain knowledge in authorization, clearing, settlement, or tokenization
- Master's degree in Software Engineering
