Sage AI Labs creates infrastructure for AI agents to transact on the open web. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the architecture and reliability of systems that handle real purchases, working directly with the CTO.
You will build resilient checkout agents, scalable product ingestion pipelines, and embedding-based search ranking systems. The role requires handling adversarial environments where retailers change structures unexpectedly.
What you'll do
- Own architecture, code, deploys, monitoring and on-call for transaction systems
- Build frontier-model computer-use agents for live checkouts at scale
- Create self-generating and validating infrastructure for product ingestion
- Implement embedding-based retrieval, LLM query understanding and reranking
- Ensure automatic recovery from failures in retailer integrations
What you'll need
- 5+ years building backend and infrastructure systems with strong Python skills
- Experience owning production systems end-to-end including databases and observability
- Ability to fix classes of problems rather than just individual incidents
- Comfort with adversarial problems where external systems work against you
- Strong focus on correctness due to real financial stakes
- Ability to move forward without finished specifications in a changing roadmap
Nice to have
- Built AI-first products or LLM-based agents in production
- Working knowledge of classic ML and deep learning for retrieval reasoning
- Background in e-commerce, payments, or fraud and risk infrastructure
