You will design and maintain the host provisioning stack and orchestration engine that powers Railway’s infrastructure. This position involves optimizing bin packing algorithms, managing bare metal clusters, and building internal tools to support engineering teams.
The work is primarily internal-facing, requiring you to define immutable infrastructure using Terraform and Ansible while ensuring high availability and fault tolerance for distributed systems.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain host provisioning stacks using PXE boot and Ansible
- Evolve orchestration engines for managing clusters, containers, and VMs
- Optimize bin packing algorithms to maximize resource utilization
- Develop internal observability and alerting systems for fleet health
- Design CI pipelines to safely ship infrastructure code
- Implement immutable infrastructure principles with Terraform
- Build Golang or Rust GRPC services for scale
- Write engineering requirement documents from idea to implementation
What you'll need
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and fault tolerance
- Hands-on experience with bare metal provisioning and configuration management
- Comfortable building and operating internal developer tools
- Ability to prioritize effectively in ambiguous startup environments
- Strong communication skills for documenting solutions and requirements
- Grit to implement, scale, and replace solutions as needed
