Powerline is a VC-backed cleantech company using AI and machine learning to optimize renewable energy and battery storage on the electricity grid. As a Senior Optimization Software Engineer, you will build algorithms that automate projects for maximum performance and economic efficiency.
You will join an early-stage team addressing critical challenges in complex electricity markets. The role requires deep expertise in optimization models and a strong understanding of energy systems to drive operational excellence.
What you'll do
- Develop optimization, forecasting, and control algorithms for battery and renewable projects
- Take ownership of algorithm performance across all operated projects
- Act as a market rules expert and stay current on wholesale market developments
- Analyze market data trends and asset performance to recommend improvements
- Focus on results regardless of the specific algorithmic approach used
What you'll need
- 5+ years building mixed-integer linear or nonlinear optimization models
- Experience solving real-world problems with high dimensionality
- Strong knowledge of energy markets, batteries, or renewable energy systems
- Proficiency in Python with professional software engineering standards
- Excellent communication skills for articulating complex technical concepts
- High attention to detail in model development and analysis
Nice to have
- Ph.D. in operations research, electrical engineering, or related field
- Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development
- Proficiency with SQL-based databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Experience with analytic dashboard development and visualization tools
