ShiftKey is transitioning into an AI-native company within the healthcare staffing marketplace. As a Staff AI Engineer, you will own the AI infrastructure layer, including the organizational knowledge platform and cloud-based agent operations. You will build upon existing production retrieval foundations to architect richer retrieval, agentic infrastructure, and platform APIs while ensuring strict cost and compliance guardrails.
What you'll do
- Evolve the AI knowledge platform to serve internal tools and customer features
- Architect multi-step agentic infrastructure on AWS with built-in cost guardrails
- Design graph-based retrieval for multi-hop queries across organizational data
- Define the AI platform API surface and create developer-ready abstractions
- Build reference agents for incident triage and customer support use cases
- Monitor compute and model spend to keep workloads within defined budgets
What you'll need
- 7+ years software engineering experience with 2+ years in production AI/LLM systems
- Deep expertise in retrieval engineering including hybrid search and re-ranking
- Experience with agentic frameworks, tool use, and multi-step reasoning loops
- Proficiency in Go, Python, or TypeScript with strong production engineering habits
- Hands-on experience with managed cloud AI platforms like AWS Bedrock
- Ability to author and provision infrastructure independently using Terraform
- Familiarity with observability metrics and evaluation harnesses for AI systems
- Understanding of HIPAA-style data handling in regulated SaaS environments
