ShiftKey is transforming healthcare staffing by connecting facilities with licensed professionals through a regulated marketplace. As the company transitions into an AI-native organization, this role focuses on building the infrastructure that powers both internal tools and customer-facing capabilities.
You will inherit existing retrieval foundations and lead the architecture of the next generation of agentic systems. Working with high autonomy, you will partner with engineering leadership to define API surfaces, implement graph-based retrieval, and ensure cost-effective operations within a HIPAA-compliant environment.
What you'll do
- Evolve the AI knowledge platform to serve internal and customer-facing needs
- Architect multi-step agentic infrastructure on AWS with built-in cost guardrails
- Design graph-based retrieval systems for multi-hop queries and knowledge accumulation
- Define the AI platform API surface and create developer-ready abstractions
- Build reference agents for incident triage and customer support use cases
- Monitor and optimize AI infrastructure costs including compute and model spend
What you'll need
- 7+ years software engineering experience with 2+ years in production AI/LLM systems
- Advanced retrieval engineering skills including hybrid search and re-ranking
- Experience with agentic frameworks, tool use, and multi-step reasoning loops
- Proficiency in Go, Python, or TypeScript with strong production engineering practices
- Hands-on experience with managed cloud AI platforms like AWS Bedrock
- Ability to author and provision infrastructure independently using Terraform
- Familiarity with observability metrics and evaluation harnesses for AI systems
- Understanding of data handling requirements in regulated SaaS environments
