You will define the architectural direction for n8n’s core platform, ensuring that execution, data, and infrastructure systems evolve as a unified whole. Working with over 80 product engineers, you will design scalable foundations that support diverse workloads and deployment models without adding unnecessary complexity.

The position requires deep expertise in distributed systems and TypeScript, focusing on durable workflow execution, state management, and platform enablement. You will lead technical decisions through RFCs and mentor teams to raise the bar for system design and maintainability.

What you'll do

  • Drive architecture across core platform teams to ensure coherent system evolution
  • Design adaptable backend foundations for various workloads and deployment models
  • Evolve core subsystems including workflow execution, orchestration, and scaling
  • Ensure correctness and resilience in distributed environments and failure modes
  • Shape data persistence architecture including scaling, sharding, and migrations
  • Lead technical decisions via proposals and RFCs to align stakeholders
  • Mentor engineers through design reviews and technical guidance

What you'll need

  • Track record of staff-level architectural ownership across multiple systems
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts like idempotency and queues
  • Experience designing configurable systems at scale without brittleness
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js for complex backend systems
  • Expertise in data-intensive systems regarding persistence and isolation
  • Ability to influence teams through technical judgment and clear communication
  • Focus on creating clear abstractions and developer experiences

Nice to have

  • Experience with workflow engines, orchestration platforms, or devtools
  • Background in frontend platform architecture for canvas or real-time apps
  • Knowledge of durable execution patterns like event sourcing or sagas
  • Experience designing multi-tenant systems with strict isolation
  • Contributions to open-source software and public contract maintenance
  • Experience migrating monolithic systems to modular architectures
  • Designing products for both managed cloud and self-hosted environments
