Join Playlab's engineering team to create open-source AI tools that empower educators and students. You will design interfaces for AI interaction, build no-code app creators, and implement systems for scalable deployment in schools.
The position requires architecting subsystems across the frontend and backend, collaborating with designers and ML engineers, and mentoring other engineers. You will ship experiments quickly and refine them based on user value.
What you'll do
- Build adaptive AI-native interfaces for various learning contexts
- Develop core application builder for natural language app creation
- Implement real-time collaboration features for co-creation
- Create systems for autonomous AI agents in educational settings
- Design voice interfaces and mobile-first experiences for low-bandwidth areas
- Build discovery systems for sharing and remixing educator apps
- Integrate with Google Workspace, Canvas LMS, and other platforms
- Architect and ship subsystems from frontend to backend
- Mentor engineers on development patterns and architecture
What you'll need
- 7+ years building production web applications
- Strong experience with modern React frameworks and TypeScript
- Proficiency in building backend services with Node and TypeScript
- Experience with databases, APIs, and external service integrations
- Ability to translate designs into working features effectively
- Comfortable working cross-functionally with customers and teams
- Strong communication skills for remote-first collaboration
Nice to have
- Experience designing or building AI-powered interfaces
- Background in real-time collaborative features like WebSockets
- Experience with educational technology or mission-driven orgs
- Knowledge of accessibility and internationalization best practices
- Experience integrating with LMS platforms or educational systems
