As a Staff Software Engineer at Affinity, you will define the technical strategy for core product domains and lead multi-quarter initiatives. This hands-on position requires working across the stack, from backend data models to frontend visualizations, while partnering with product and design teams to solve ambiguous problems.
You will raise the team's technical bar through mentorship and code reviews, ensuring high reliability and performance. The role also involves integrating AI development tools to enhance developer velocity and operational health.
What you'll do
- Define technical direction and architecture for core product domains
- Lead complex, multi-quarter projects from conception to delivery
- Partner with product and design to shape feature definitions
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through code and design reviews
- Identify and implement improvements in reliability and performance
- Manage operational health including observability and on-call duties
- Integrate AI development tools to optimize team workflow
What you'll need
- 10+ years of experience shipping production software as a full-stack engineer
- Proven track record of technical leadership on high-stakes projects
- Strong server-side experience with modern OOP practices
- Proficiency in building component-based interfaces with React and TypeScript
- Deep understanding of relational databases and system scaling
- Practical fluency with AI-assisted development tools like Cursor or Copilot
- Ability to influence beyond your immediate team through standards and architecture
Nice to have
- Experience building features on top of LLMs or agent frameworks
- Background in companies where AI-assisted development is standard practice
- Expertise in Ruby and PostgreSQL specifically
