You will design and maintain the core systems that handle email delivery, including SMTP protocols, retry strategies, and throttling mechanisms. The team works on ensuring high deliverability and protecting the network from abuse through robust backend engineering.
What you'll do
- Build and operate email transport infrastructure and MTA systems
- Implement SMTP delivery, routing, retries, and backoff strategies
- Design throttling systems for domains, providers, customers, and IPs
- Manage shared IP pools, dedicated IPs, and warmup execution
- Improve classification of bounces, deferrals, and delivery outcomes
- Create debugging tools for delivery issues by customer or route
- Partner with Trust & Safety to prevent network abuse
- Participate in incident response and on-call duties for critical services
What you'll need
- Strong backend engineering experience
- Experience with high-volume delivery or messaging systems
- Understanding of queues, workers, idempotency, and distributed systems
- Knowledge of SMTP, MTAs, DNS, IP pools, and mailbox behavior
- Focus on reliability, observability, and operational excellence
- Ability to work with low ego and high ownership
Nice to have
- Experience with high-workload applications
- Knowledge of email best practices
- Proficiency in TypeScript and Golang
