You will manage the operating system of an engineering pod, ensuring high standards for people management, execution, and technical quality. Working closely with a Technical Lead and Product Manager, you will drive delivery for complex financial workflows while maintaining psychological safety and accountability.

The position requires fluency in AI-assisted development and a hands-on approach to understanding the codebase. You will be expected to ship code on your first day and maintain enough technical depth to challenge plans and recognize risks without being the primary decision-maker.

What you'll do

  • Own pod performance, priorities, and operating cadence including planning and retros
  • Conduct weekly 1:1s and provide continuous specific feedback to direct reports
  • Partner with Product Managers to prioritize high-value problems and challenge requirements
  • Collaborate with Technical Leads on architecture, quality, and technical risk management
  • Manage onboarding for new engineers to ensure fast ramp-up and meaningful work
  • Identify staffing needs, interview candidates, and support succession planning
  • Surface risks and delivery issues early to the Head of Engineering with context

What you'll need

  • Experience managing 5+ engineers directly with examples of performance improvement
  • Credible engineering background with ability to read PRs and evaluate design docs
  • Track record of improving team delivery predictability and shipping production software
  • Fluency in modern AI product development including evals and experiment design
  • Comfort with ambiguity and complex domains like mortgage origination
  • Strong written communication skills for remote-first collaboration
  • Ability to give direct, kind feedback and handle uncomfortable conversations early

Nice to have

  • Experience with operational reliability practices like SLOs and incident response
  • Keen eye for security risk when handling sensitive personal data
  • Experience hiring and closing candidates in a growing organization
