You will own the technical design and delivery of AI systems that power Mapbox's location-aware services. Working across departments, you will tackle high-priority AI problems in search, places data, and navigation intelligence. Your focus includes defining product behavior, building measurement frameworks, and ensuring quality through rigorous evaluation of non-deterministic systems.
What you'll do
- Define product behavior and build evaluation systems for non-deterministic AI outputs
- Run continuous evaluation of APIs, SDKs, and data representations from an end-user perspective
- Build data pipelines for ingestion, entity resolution, and quality checks on large datasets
- Design feedback loops to generate improvement data from product usage
- Design boundaries between models and tools, including model harnesses and delegation logic
- Optimize systems for latency and cost targets using caching, streaming, and model routing
- Build internal CLI and tooling to help teams iterate quickly on AI features
- Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 system availability
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in STEM and 5+ years of software engineering experience
- 2+ years shipping LLM-backed features to real users with error budgets
- Deep understanding of designing evaluations for non-deterministic systems
- Data engineering depth with SQL and distributed processing frameworks
- Fluency with tool calling, agent orchestration, and handling failure modes
- Strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript
- Experience diagnosing latency in distributed request paths
- Clear written communication skills for distributed decision-making
Nice to have
- Experience with geospatial data, routing, or OpenStreetMap
- Public API or SDK design experience for external developers
- Experience building against MCP or similar tool transports
- Experience running evaluations in CI with commercial or custom harnesses
- Background in automotive, in-vehicle infotainment, or voice pipelines
- Experience working under constrained compute or offline conditions
