As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will shape technical direction across teams while staying close to the code and systems. This role leverages technical judgment and execution to help other engineers make better decisions, rather than people management.
What you'll do
- Own high-consequence backend problems spanning multiple services or domains
- Define system boundaries and architectural direction without central control
- Lead technical decisions by clarifying constraints, risks, and trade-offs
- Enhance performance, resilience, and data integrity in production systems
- Solve recurring structural issues instead of treating symptoms individually
- Stay hands-on with implementation or prototyping to create clarity
- Mentor senior engineers and improve code review quality across teams
- Collaborate with leaders on sequencing, risk, and technical investment
What you'll need
- Proven technical impact across multiple teams or large product domains
- Deep ownership of distributed backend systems at significant scale
- Strong judgment in service boundaries and asynchronous communication
- Expertise in relational databases, transactions, and concurrency
- Track record of improving reliability and scalability via durable mechanisms
- Ability to influence direction through evidence and trusted execution
- Clear communication skills for complex technical decision-making
- Strong engineering fundamentals and judgment on standardization
